In the mid 19th century, the 4th Duke remodelled and enlarged the walled garden to the east of the castle in an Italianate style. This included both flower and vegetable growing areas. The garden fell into disuse during the 20th century but was successfully restored in the 21st century to become the basis of The Alnwick Garden.
